Process

_To conduct your research you will be assigned one of the following
aspects of the Industrial era. There are several documents in the below
table that you can use. However, you are not limited to
these documents. There will be other sites listed below that you can
use. Make note that you must list all your resources. To complete your
research you must analyze these resources using the Documents Analysis
worksheet given. When you are done researching you can begin working on
your scrapbook. This can be done using any materials you think makes
sense. You must include several pictures and excerpts from documents.
Below the pictures and documents you must write a paragraph analyzing
the source. These paragraphs are the heart of your scrapbook so make
sure they are thoroughly descriptive.
Guiding Questions
1) Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in America?
2) What were the characteristics of people working in factories?
3) Compose five descriptive, detailed sentences representing the working conditions that were part of the everyday existence of these workers.
4) What were the typical hours and pay for factory workers?
5) Why did people subject themselves to these conditions?
6) What other jobs were available to them besides working in a factory?
7) Would you work in a place like this in order to support your family? Why or why not? Your answer must contain at least two paragraphs.
8) List one specific item of information that was learned from each of the explored websites.
Write a journal entry in your assigned role. This entry must consist of a minimum of eight sentences, and at least two paragraphs. This entry should be written as if you were living in the day, and should include descriptive language. Males who are in the women's group can write as if you were writing about your wife, daughter or niece. Write about your daily activities, what time you get up, what time and what you eat each day, what task you have at work, your relationship with your supervisor or overseer, what time you were able to go to sleep, if you have children, siblings, etc. Be sure to define your family unit.
After you complete the questions above, your group is to create a newspaper article as if you were a reporter living in America
during the Industrial Revolution. You will write this news story as if you were what we call now an investigative reporter. Remember to make your descriptions very vivid, make the reader feel as if they are actually in the factory, describing the sights, smells, lighting conditions and noise -- bring the reader back in time to feel what it was like.
