Your response can include your opinion on the issue, how it may have made you feel to live during that time and deal with the same problems, what role you think government should have played and why, a connection to a modern-day event that has had a similar effect (ex. housing crash led many to leave cities and migrate to cheaper areas with more job opportunities), etc. Please keep in mind the minimum length requirement for your initial post.
Your blog for this week is fairly simple. Your assignment is to find a total of 3 primary source documents that demonstrate the effect of the Great Depression on families, workers, businesses, government, etc. You may find a picture that depicts city or rural life; a political cartoon that discusses how the government dealt with the Stock Market Crash or Great Depression; a newspaper article that discusses an aspect of either the Stock Market Crash, Great Depression, or Dust Bowl; a poem, story or other form of art that depicts life during the Great Depression, etc. Please provide a link to each source, briefly describe each and identify the historical theme(s) that is addressed (GRAPES), then select one of your primary source documents to reflect upon.

I believe the last picture you posted is actually saying that the people there couldn't care for themselves and was telling men not to stop there since there wasn't enough already. I believe it may have meant food, though the reference to "jobless" men does point towards money or jobs.

Helloooo 10 years into the future! I know you aren't going to see this but I wanted to say that your input on the photo really helped me with my history assignment that I was struggling on. It really gave me a clearer view of what the billboard meant and how men really struggled in the past. I hope you're doing well and I wish the best for you.

I agree with lyle when she talks about the children protesting. Its sad to see the children going so far as to protest for their parents jobs. It shows how hard it was for them. I would also go out and protest instead of my children. Many people focus on the adults and businesses that went through negative affects of the Great Depression. Not many stop and think about the impact on the children like not only starving and not having a place to live but having to drop out of school and watch their parents suffer through the Great Depression as well.

In the second photo, i can see how america is slowly getting to the same point. So many people have been laid off from their jobs, and can't find work. Our economy has gotten worse. It would've been hard living in this time period because of the hardships even though America is like a lot close to the same. They didnt have the technology and medical advancements we have now, and kids didn't have to work like they did. So, I think we still have it pretty well. Actually, really well.. And I think we should help people like this looking for a job. I don't know, that's just my heart.

In this first picture, not only are the looking for work but they have to compete against each other for work and the rest of the unemployed. The second picture shows a dad and five small children. They are gathered around a very small table with less food than imaginable. The third shows just how difficult it can be to get a job during this time and even the chamber of commerce knows this.

I agree with Jocelyn Melendez because I picked the same photo too. Great minds think alike. This really shows how much the economy decline was affecting the citizens of America. Jobless men didn’t have many choices for future employment and couldn’t support their families or themselves. It’s crazy but the economic problems during the Depression have some parallels to the economic situation today. The United States today is having just as much problems and life is becoming a struggle for many. I feel people should be wiser with what they do with their money. Eating out and shopping all the time for silly things is not going to help. During the 1920s, people were spending money that they didn’t have just because so many new inventions and products were being distributed widely to the public. Many became broke and lost all their money in the stock markets crash. I also loved the political carton you found. So many people, including Hoover were prosperous and thriving but were soon struck down by the Great Depression because of over spending.

I like Vanessa's political cartoon that showed how America spent way to much money in the roaring twenty's. The cartoon did a good job showing that because of that time period, the thrity's were a terrible time of economic depression in all of America. I think the artist did a great job of displaying the positives with the money and Patriotism but it also shows the evilness and greed in the peoples facial expressions. For example the man shoveling money seems like he would be a nice guy because he is giving away money, but in truth all he is doing is creating problem for the country.

I also like that this political cartoon shows the large waste of monmey spent on the "roaring twenties". Prohibition was an alright idea at first but in the end no one followed the law therefore all of the money had gone to complete waste.

I like the poem you put on the blog because I think that it demonstrates that in that time, people were thankful just to be alive because maybe things didn't really go their way a lot of the time. It also shows how it not only had an impact on the adults, but also took the childhood away from many kids in thistime and they could no longer be the happy innocent children they once were, they were now stuck having to look for work or find a way to make money for the entire family to survive. I think this really shows the "Zeitgeist" or spirit of the era back then and I know that it would have really been difficul to live back then. It also showed the fact that everyone hoped that it would end and that they would turn to their beliefs (in this case God) to ask for this horrible time to end.

I liked the picure you posted of the little boy holding up the sign asking "Why can't you give my dad a job?" It's sad how everyone went from being so happy and enjoying life and their luxurious items to not even being able to get hired for work. The Great Depression was horrible and so many people were left unemployed. I think people shouldn't have spent so much money on things that they never really even needed in the first place because if they had used their money wisely, i don't think this event wouldn't have been that bad

I strongly agree that the billboard in contrast with the American people in front of it, would be the epitome of irony. Especially since on the top of the billboard it says, “World’s Highest Standard of Living” but the standard of living dropped for a lot of people during this time. I think this was a great example of the historical themes economy and society because it showed how society adjusted to the Great Depression, and how the economic failure of the nation effected the people. I don’t think however that the people that had to suffer through the Great Depression brought it upon themselves. Obviously some mistakes were made because things like buying on credit hadn’t been done before, so everyone was still figuring out the pros and cons of the system. Workers cant keep their jobs if their employer cant afford to keep too many employees due to economic failure of the nation of the time, even though they might not have contributed to the economic downfall. I do agree that we can learn from the mistakes of the past by studying events like the Great Depression and try to avoid similar situations from happening in the future.

I too agree that the billboard is ironic in how it so greatly differs from the civilians in front of it. At the top of the billboard is even printed the “world’s highest standard of living”, but the truth is that that very same standard of living died in a spiraling downward awful slide to terribly living for a MANY people during the Depression. This is a wonderful and firghtening example of differences between reality and how the government saw its people during this time. (Themes: Government, Economy, and Society) That being said, I doubt that the people that induced the Great Depression all by themselves. Just like today's economic crisis, a lot of the blame rests on the shoulders of the educated who took advantage of the ignorance of their customers and who dealt business unethically, knowing that eventually the rules would have to quit being bent. Some blame still goes to the people because people should really know what they're doing with their money before they spend it all twice over in credit and bonds. We SHOULD be able to learn from these mistakes, but as October of 2008 showed, the people did not learn from the Great Depression. But the inspiring thing is that the Government DID learn because by interfering this time and by acting as Obama and the rest of the administration did to puch forward bailouts and such, our leaders successfully navigated us through and out of a crisis that easily could have been a hundred times worse.

This shows people's work ethic and need to find a job. It's really sad to see that educated people that were hard workers and very motivated were at such a loss.

This is a picture of migrant workers that work on the fields. This demonstrates the aspect of social class and economy. This is because the California farm owners hired migrants to exploit them because they would accept lower wages. This also led to feelings of resentment toward people of other ethnicities in America and was reflected by the tighter immigration quotas.

I agree with your statement about exploiting immigrant workers because it is very true. It still happens till today, since they were from another country and just happy to be in our country and didn’t fully understand the concept of how much they deserved to get so we took advantage of them. Which was not cool. It lowered the chances of an American citizen to receive a job because they expected more pay and better rights in the work place, when the job was taken by someone who expected way less pay and weren’t sure of their rights. This would cause resentment towards immigrants because they were contributing to our bad economy. And I find that very ironic as well considering people were desperate for free food in the same picture as a billboard talking about high standards of living. People probably were still hoping for a break and for the economy to get better but it didn’t.

I can't even imaging being put i n a situation where I couldn't even give may family food, safety, support, and at LEAST a home. Also, I was interested by your allusion to the migrations and how if the great depression hadn't happened, we could not have had so many migrations, which would change the average person per state that we have now.

Marissa, I liked your choices of pictures and the poem. The first picture was one I almost chose for my post. It was amazing how many people were standing in line waiting for free coffee and doughnuts. The people were all unemployed, which gives an idea of how many people were affected by the Great Depression. The second picture was a great pick because it was a political cartoon that showed how hard it was to get out of the Great Depression. The cartoon was basically saying that the government wasn’t doing anything to help the businesses get out of the Great Depression, while the employers were doing everything they could. The poem said straightforward that everyone suffered and even the children were affected. Not everyone was unhappy because they were thankful for what they had. “Deep sorrow filled the americans heart” is a line that shows how hard it was to be living in that time period.

The picture of the people who don't have jobs outside of the coffee shop is a very powerful image. The government at this time did not give out help to the people so those who could gave what they had. The second image I agree with your observation completely about how the public was stuck in a cycle of hopelessness. The last poem is an extremely helpless time to live in because many people were without jobs and hope. Overall I agree with your interpretation of these primary sources during the Great Depression.

I also enjoyed seeing the posts about the new deal, and its reception in the supreme court. All the pictures accurately portray how lost people were and how much the depression was taking away from them. I especially enjoyed the one that showed how nothing had changed from the 20s to today. People are still selling apples trying to make money in the world, so true.

I thought that your examples of life during the Great Depression were very good. The first picture really shows how harsh the Great Depression was for a lot of people. Only the lucky ones had jobs and could afford food for their families. The reality of being a kid during such a dramatic economic depression is really sad. Seeing people dying from starvation and having a generally sad environment all around you would be really tough to understand as a young child.

Everyone was so used to having enough money and living in a world of new inventions and entertainment that when the great depression hit, life became dull and hopeless for Americans. I also thought your first picture was interesting because it shows the harsh reality of unemployment at this time.

I think you did a really good job explaining in each post how upsetting and difficult it must have been for all of the people. I also really like the picture you posted about free food for the unemployed, in my post, I posted a video of a man who grew up during the great depression and explained how a man would go around with free bread from a bakery.

The source that I picked first was a photograph by Joe Stiglitz. It is a photograph of a billboard sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce that shows even though there was a Great Depression, jobless men still kept looking for jobs because times were tough but they had to persevere. This photograph identifies with Economics and Social Structure. Economics because times were bad and Social Structure because the Chamber of Commerce is a community organization that helps with business and the only thing they could do was to encourage men to continue to look for jobs.

I really like Kristen’s photos/ cartoons my favorite is the last one. The last one plays a role in mostly just Economics and really reflects what is going on. Also I liked the first picture because it really portrayed that everyone was affected by the great depression not just the children

Kristen's choice of primary sources might not show much, but they definitely speak heavily as the images have many allusions. The first one, for instance, only shows a kid asking employers to give his father a job. If you really think about it, you realize that there millions of other kids and wives suffering in the Uniited States because they can't afford food and shelter, which are necessities for living in an urban environment. The second picture holds a sense of irony as there are jobless men walking under the sign that says "jobless men keep walking." This implies how the unemployed have little hope in finding a job soon and that they really cant do anything about it.

Margarita, i used the same newspaper photo for one of my references, and i agree with you that reading a headline like that would scare me. i also agree that this situation could have been avoided by the people if they had been smarter with their money, though i also believe that the government played a decent role in creating that situation as well.

I like Johns last picture about the Dust Bowl. Its a pretty crazy picture of how big and serious the storms got. People had to fight to survive during the storms. I like the truck trying to drive away from a huge wall of dust coming towards it. I also think the second link is a pretty powerful picture on how kids were trying to help their parents get jobs. It shows that the great depression affected everyone and many were left without jobs.

so one of my primary sources is from one of my grandma's friends who visited recently. Yes i know my grandma is old. But her friend said that during the depression people would come into her yard and they would feed them. they were also near a train station and people would steal their oranges. that part was pointless but whatever.

I feel really bad that so many people lost their jobs and homes. I think that the president should have taken more action and actually done something to help improve the lives of everyone suffering during the Great Depression. I also like all of the other links that you posted and the article was pretty interesting and did a great job explaining the stock market crash as well as the effects.

Source 1: A black and white photo of a boy holding up a strike sign that reads, "Why can't you give my dad a job?" This image shows the effect of the great depression on society seeing as all family members including children were now getting pulled into poverty. It's pretty sad to one child on the street, four of them is just really disheartening.

I agree Braden, back then Americans were hard working and took pride in their work. They didn't complain, all they wanted was to earn their fair share and that's the american spirit of drive and motivation that we seem to be losing. A lot of local made products aren't as good as they used to be and now were buying everything foreign, toys, cars, clothing, etc. We used to make all that stuff on our soil and it was quality assured merchandise too. It's sad that we don't take pride in our work like everyone did back then, im not saying everyone now a days is lazy, but you know what I mean.

I agree with Erin about her first picture and how it is horrible. People lived in really bad conditions during this time. Everything was really rough and I, like Erin, cannot fathom how hard it must have been. I also liked her thoughts about the government creating jobs now because I think it's good that she made the connection from now to then. Overall, the Great Depression was really hard on people and bad situations and living conditions were created for many.

I liked Isabella's post because it showed both the good and bad aspects of the 1920's: roaring twenties (prosperous time) as well as the Great Depression. However she also included how the hardships struck everyone in society, kids and adults. I like how she includes the young people in society of the time, and how they didn't understand stock markets, devaluation, and all the problems the U.S. was going through; but one thing they did understand is how their parents were struggling to make a living and to not end in poverty. I think including children in her blog touches people, and shows us how the 20's were so tough everyone could tell.

I chose all political cartoons because I find them more interesting due to the humor and fun little characters depicted in them.

I cannot imagine having to leave my home because we couldn't pay for it anymore. I cannot even begin to understand how these farmers were feeling. Life must have been so hard during this time period. People had to leave homes that they had worked hard to bulid and maybe had come to love. It just breaks my heart that people had to do this back during the GD.

Oh and all three of my things relate to the economic part of GRAPES because they all have to do with the lack of money in the Great Depression.

I agree with Jack that govnerment needs to stay our of buisness, because no matter what people say, government can and will never be nearly as efficent as buisnesses

I agree with jack because I used the same pictures. I think most people used these pictures. I thought that they were really funny. I think that is why everyone used them because they are entertaining and not boring like an article.

Im reflecting upon my first link i posted where the various administrations that F. Roosevelt created during the great depression are dancing around him. The artist depicts the administrations as children joyfully dancing and FDR watching over them. What I think this represents is the little power the administrations actually withheld. I think this is the case because of the childish looks on all of their faces sort of representing that they are not serious and effective. This is sad because people of all classes are experiencing the Great Depression and although they are trying, the government is being very ineffective at resolving any issues.

I like what Lyle put because she chose the same picture I did. This picture made me feel bad for the families during the great depression too. I agree with her because she says that she would have gone protesting herself instead of her children. This is true as making your children protest won’t really help. What would help was showing what you could do, to get a job.

@ Erin Fitzgerald I loved your picture of the people waiting in line for the free food. I loved it because of the face that it was 100% reality. People that were suffering in the Great Depression were horribly financially crippled when the economy crashed and a lot of the time they were out of there jobs and there houses. Because of this they had to go to places that handed out free food.

http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/depression/depression.htm I find this picture to be kindof deressing because its to men walking with their things while they are are walking by a train that says "next time take the train relax" when they obviously cant afford the relaxing train ride. i think this picture has to do with economy in grapes since it has to do with money.
